THERE'S GONNA BE SOMETHING YOU WANT AT THE VILLA AND HERE IS WHERE YOU'LL FIND IT.
The markets are pricey on St. John compared to what you are used to so keep that in mind. If you like good steak or seafood, consider purchasing items in the states and bring them down frozen, if cost is a consideration. Similarly, the same can be true of wine. The selection of good wines is sparse and the prices for wine are outrageous. Food and beer are reasonable enough for an island.
The most extensive selection is at the Starfish Market, but the prices range from 25%-50% more per item. Dolphin Market is similar in price, but with a more limited selection. The closest shopping option to Andante is one of the Dolphin Markets – it's only about 5 minutes away.
The best prices are consistently at Pine Peace Mini Mart. They do not have much in the the way of produce and meats, but they always have the best prices on almost all other items. So, you could do Starfish Market for fresh meat, Dolphin Market for produce (including organic) and Pine Peace Mini Mart for all liquor items.
If you don't mind a haul or want to pick up a few more specialty items, St. Thomas is an option. Hit the Cost-U-Less. It is the cheapest and best place to get liquor, cases of beer and wine, but you'll have to put the effort in to get it back to the villa. Moe’s Fresh is right in Red Hook, so you don’t have to worry about getting transportation into the middle of the island to get to it. About 2-3 miles down the road from Red Hook going towards Charlotte Amalie is The Food Center which is very well stocked and a favorite of the boating crowd. Anything outside of RedHook, you either need to take a taxi or safari bus. If you can take your rental car over, there is the added cost of $65 round trip on the car ferry and the fact that the last car ferry returning to St. John is at 7pm and you have to be at the dock by 6:15pm. If you miss it, you are stranded. Probably not worth the savings in food.
